Rapping in Nigeria

I read the following article here and took a screenshot of its headline which I posted directly above this entry. I can see the confusion, as well as the resulting crash blossom, especially in the US where rap is often associated with a specific genre of music, that using rapped as a past participle would create.

The word rap (past tense is rapped) means to rebuke or criticize sharply (see number four here under verb) but also refers to performing rap music (see number seven here under verb).

I can’t help but conjure up images of Nigerian leaders giving rap performances on the streets shortly after the attacks, but just how popular is hip hop music in Nigeria? Probably not as popular as oil.
