Meet Lydia Cacho Ribeiro

August 10, 2011

Today, I would like to shift my attention back to human rights issues by introducing my readers to a journalist named Lydia Cacho Ribeiro, who by my count is one very brave and courageous woman. Ms. Ribeiro’s name probably isn’t at all familiar to most people outside Mexico, but she is a hero and champion of human rights for battered women and sexually exploited children within the country.

Ms. Ribeiro’s safety has been at risk ever since she exposed a child pornography ring in Mexico orchestrated by a man with very powerful political allies. Her crime was not writing the truth, but writing the truth about someone who considers himself above the law.

Rather than cower to threats on her life, Lydia Cacho Ribeiro marches on and continues her work. She has received death threats, has been unlawfully detained by police officers and has been assaulted, but she continues to seek social justice for those who have been wronged.

What we see here in Ms. Ribeiro’s case is nothing surprising nor is it new, especially when only a handful of people possess all the power, which by all accounts will lead to corruption of power.

There is no question Lydia Cacho Ribeiro is one strong individual–the deck could not be more stacked against her. She should be applauded for her work, not excoriated. For her sake, and for the sake of those who need her help, I hope she can continue her work safely for many years to come.
