Dental FAS

May 6, 2011

Today, I came across this article about a woman who may be suffering from foreign accent syndrome (FAS). I have written about FAS here previously. It appears the woman, who lives in Oregon here in the United States, now speaks with an accent that is described as “an odd mixture of Irish, Scottish and northern British, with perhaps a dash of Australian and South African for good measure.”

Usually, FAS is a result of head trauma or a stroke. In the 56-year-old woman’s case, her accent developed shortly after she had dental surgery. Maybe the thought of going to the dentist triggered some sort of head trauma; I know it does for me!
