Lord of the Rings

April 30, 2011

The Royal Wedding did actually provide me with some useful material. Believe it or not, I was watching Entertainment Tonight when the correspondent did a segment on the tradition within the royal family of giving a gold wedding band.

Prince William gave to his bride, Kate Middleton, a wedding band in which the gold is found in a mine in Wales, where it’s under tight security. The gold is rare and is 18 carrots according to ET, which makes it three-fourths pure gold.

You can see where I’m going with this train of thought. That’s right, the presentation and tradition of the ring is conspicuous consumption at its truest form. Only those with extreme wealth–most notably the royals–are able to purchase rings made from this type of gold.
