Porpoises with a Purpose

April 28, 2011

I read this article here about how the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is working on a “soft” release of two finless porpoises–or “Yantgze Mermaid”–into the wild. The finless porpoise is on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) critically endangered list.

I visited the IUCN website to read what has pushed this species to the brink of extinction. Not surprisingly, the major threat against the finless porpoises is mankind and his activities. Finless porpoises can become entangled in nets from fishing, or they face challenges such “habitat loss and degradation, boat traffic, and pollution.”

As I have stated in the past, mankind is one of the most destructive species on this planet simply through the activities in which we engage. With a simple flip of a switch, we can inflict so much damage on the entire world. Perhaps we should pause, take a few steps back and truly think about the consequences of our actions.
