A Song for Mother Earth

April 22, 2011

My friend Kristen suggested I write a poem for this year’s Earth Day. I’m not a very good poet, but I thought I would give it a try. I think I shall call this poem “A Song for Mother Earth.”

Mother Earth, we have just one
Let’s do all we can to protect her, before she is gone
The future can shine brightly, if the present changes for the better

She feeds us with her soil
She nuorishes us with her nutrients
She replenishes us with the water she drops from the sky

But what happens when we destroy what she gives us?
We pour the black substance into the fertile ground and seas
We tear down the trees which give us air

Our emissions from our transport vehicles prevent her from breathing
Our massive energy buildings causes her harm
While she cannot keep up with our overconsumption

Let us help her, so she can provide for the future
Let us stop harming her, so she can stay healthy
Let us stop taking more from her than she can provide, so she can recover

Mother Earth, we have just one
Let us protect her, before she is gone
