Aiding Ethiopian Repression

December 19, 2010

Would you want to know if someone was using the money you were donating to him or her as a way of violating someone’s rights? I know I would. A new report from Human Rights Watch details how the Ethiopian government is using funds from international donations for repression.

The report demonstrated how the government uses state resources, including programs financed by large international donors, to suppress political dissent by conditioning access to essential services on support for the ruling party.

I guess the ruling party in Ethiopia doesn’t want anyone to challenge their power and authority, so it makes sense to use all available funds–even if it’s for aid–to do anything to destroy any chances of having an actual democracy or respecting human rights.
