mALFeasance

December 11, 2010

I may or may not have a lot of time on my hands. Today, while I was reading, a thought came across my mind regarding the word malfeasance, which is defined as “misconduct or wrongdoing, especially by a public official.”

So why was I thinking of this word? Several years ago, I was watching one of the news channels and saw a headline flash across the news ticker regarding Max Wright. Mr. Wright played Willie Tanner, the patriarch of the Tanner housewhold, in the television series ALF.

If memory serves me correctly, Mr. Wright was arrested for drunken driving. The first part of the headline read “mALFeasance,” which was a reference to his ALF days. Max Wright never served as a public official, but the play of capitalizing the letters A, L and F in malfeasance was very clever by the editor.
