Burma’s Military Government Hates Democracy

November 10, 2010

Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest may or may not be coming to an end this Saturday. I have written about Ms. Suu Kyi here and here.

Ms. Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, and her party won the elections in 1990. She was rewarded for these two accomplishments by being placed under house arrest for close to 20 years.

The military government that has been in power in Burma/Myanmar has made it perfectly clear that they didn’t want to have a true democratic election. Ms. Suu Kyi’s house arrest and the surge in political prisoners leading up the the elections make it evident enough.
