Players Lost Lowering the Boom

May 6, 2010

Here is my nominee for a crash blossom. The headline reads, “Players lost as games are won.”

To put it into context, players are being lost to injuries as games in the playoff series are being won, rather than players who are lost as a result of bad or incorrect directions, or even players that were lost by someone en route to the game and cannot be found.

On a somewhat related note, I was left scratching my head when I first read this headline, “As the Oil Threatens, Lowering the Boom.” To clear up the confusion, my suggestion to the editor would be to change the headline to either “As the Oil Threatens, the Boom is Lowered” or “Lowering the Boom as the Oil Threatens” or even “Lowering the Boom on the Threatening Oil.”
