Release Nazia

April 10, 2010

Since 2007, Nazia Quazi’s father has prevented her from leaving Saudi Arabia. She is a citizen of both Canada and India.

Both the Canadian and Indian governments must make sure that the rights its citizens are not violated whether at home or abroad.

By not addressing “male guardian” system, particularly in this case, the Saudi Arabian government has already violated at least two articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Article 9 states that “no one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.”

Article 13 (2) states that “everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.” This right applies to women as well.

Saudi Arabia should cease the “mahram” system and release Ms. Quazi immediately, so she can go home.
