Isn’t it Ironic?

January 16, 2010

In a move full of irony, President Obama has enlisted the help of former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush to “spearhead private sector fund-raising efforts” for the people of Haiti. There are no two better men who are familiar with Haiti.

It wasn’t too long ago that under President Clinton’s administration, the United States enacted programs for Haiti that “dismantled what was left of economic sovereignty and drove the country into chaos and violence. . .” (Chomsky, p.154)

Soon after Clinton left office, President Bush’s administration, with the assistance of the French, “spirited Aristide (democratically elected president of Haiit) out of the country, which fell back into the hands of the traditional predators, including elements of the army that Aristide had disbanded.” (Chomsky, p.154)

It looks like Presidents Clinton and Bush want to bury the hatchet with the people of Haiti and finally help them, after “helping” them get “democracy” not too long ago. No hard feelings right? As for President Bush, there’s no one better suited to assist with disaster relief; just ask the residents of New Orleans.
