Holiday in Cambodia

December 1, 2009

On World AIDS Day, Human Rights Watch and the International Harm Reduction Association are urging countries around the world “to reform punitive drug laws, disproportionate penalties, and harsh and discriminatory law enforcement” towards people who are HIV positive. It appears as if South Africa is one country pledging to make HIV and AIDS a priority.

Cambodia should follow South Africa’s lead by ceasing its eviction of HIV/AIDS families only to move them to an area “where there is no clean water or electricity and limited access to medical services.”

At the same time, Cambodia may also want to work with the United Nations to improve its failing human rights record.
