Unhealthy Costs

September 24, 2009

Part of the reason why Americans pay more for health care is because Americans are very unhealthy. Since Americans live unhealthier lifestyles compared to their counterparts in other industrialized nations, they will use more health care services.

From an economics point of view, demand for health care services is greater than what is being supplied currently, which drives up prices – although it’s hard to determine unless numbers can be found on how often people visit their health care professional. I’m sure there are other factors that contribute to high health care costs, but if what the article argues is true then we can all stick it to the health care industry by cutting out some bad habits such as smoking and drinking less, exercising more frequently and eating better diets.
