Scientists have made a connection between pain and swearing. Apparently, the use of profanity is a coping mechanism to help the body tolerate pain. The next time you find yourself unleashing a volley of expletives, you can simply argue that you are trying to mitigate the pain from stubbing your toe. It would be interesting to learn how these results apply to sign language.

On another note, this research brings to light why guests curse so much on Jerry Springer’s show; getting into fights and the feeling of anguish from being cheated on cannot feel good!
