Baby Bonus

July 11, 2009

An experiment performed by scientists in Britain concludes that the best way to have your lost wallet returned to you is to carry a baby picture in your wallet. Apparently, the evolution of a compassionate instinct towards infants “kicked off a caring feeling in people, which is not surprising from an evolutionary perspective.” About 88 per cent of lost wallets carrying a baby’s picture were returned.

Recently, AIG requested permission from the United States government to follow through on executive bonuses in its financial products division; the same division that “wrote insurance contracts on shaky derivatives that were at the root of the company’s near-collapse.” Maybe if AIG included pictures of babies along with their request, the government’s compassionate instinct would kick in and approve it. However, I believe the public’s outrage instinct would immediately over ride any compassionate instinct; baby pictures or not!
