Kane Gorny

March 9, 2010

The sad and tragic story of Kane Gorny should remind us that a little compassion can go a long way.

Allegations have surfaced that Mr. Gorny died due to severe dehydration as a result of negligence from not just his doctors but also the nursing staff. These people are health care professionals; men and women who have sworn an oath to care properly for their patients. Rather than taking a little bit of time to provide water to Mr. Gorny during his time of agony, staff chose to sweep him under the rug.

It’s hard to imagine that this tragedy could take place in a country where health care is fundamentally universal. It’s not a reflection on the health care system though; rather, it’s a reflection on a few individuals who failed to perform their duties to the best of their abilities.

While no one chose to help Mr. Gorny, let’s hope his story can bring out the compassion in people to help those who are in need of help. Perhaps we can even begin by helping bring down the rate of pregnancy-related deaths in the United States.
